In July 2021, Western Germany was ravaged by relentless heavy rains, causing widespread devastation in Rhineland-Palatinate and North Rhine-Westphalia. The neighboring countries of the Netherlands and Belgium also suffered significant damage. The devastating floods claimed the lives of 243 individuals, with 196 of them tragically lost in Germany alone. Erftstadt and Stollberg became symbolic of the destruction. During my assignment, I had the privilege of accompanying Bundeswehr ground units and even witnessed the operations of the German Air force firsthand. The images I captured during this event tell a powerful story of loss, resilience, and heroic efforts to mitigate the impact of the disaster.
